coop de ville
What a gorgeous day to drive around Bend and stop at lovely homes and properties, and sneak in their backyards and see their chicken coops.... This was perfectly legal on Saturday May 11, if you had purchased a Chicken Coop Tour booklet.  The booklet was your admission ticket and your map to each coop. On Saturday, I determined that "Chicken people" are a chill group.  Nothing seems to rattle them, shake them, or deter them from sharing their knowledge and their love of backyard chicks.  The cold beer from Boneyard seemed to make 'em happy too.   Here are few photos from the day. Thanks to everyone who participated. ...

May 1 seemed like the right day to present Cowgirl Cash's latest item, the Lucky Lady Dress. May Day is traditionally the day where children make paper baskets, fill them with flowers and hang them on their neighbors doors. The Cowgirl Cash version is an evening of ladies dancing, cotton, floral dresses, flower shaped cookies, music and laughter.  What we needed was beautiful weather, and mother nature served up a beautiful late afternoon.  The girls were attired, the food was set, the music was loud, and at 7 pm, the runway show began...Cowgirl Cash style. Each model let her own personality shine and each handmade dress, fit the occasion. The models showed their stuff both in Cowgirl Cash and then out on Brooks St in front of the store.  Miss-matched chairs lined the street to allow for May Day Fashion go-ers to settle in and enjoy  the show.  The grand finale...

jewelry
On Saturday a woman came in to Cowgirl Cash with a big box.  It's a typical scene.  Sometimes it's boots; sometimes it's clothes; sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's not. But this week the box was filled with jewelry.  It was her sisters collection. The woman's sister had recently died, and left the collection to her.  The jewelry had been collected by a woman who had worked for the National Park Service.  I didn't get a lot of details.  I was too busy sorting and calculating what to pay.  The woman had obviously traveled, worked and enjoyed our national parks, and every gallery and boutique near them. The collection is a hand picked array of styles.  The only theme seems to be sterling (some gold), mostly earrings (some necklaces), and contemporary artist's works, (but some vintage pieces) One consistency.... is quality.  I open on Wednesday this week at 11, but from...

It's a hopeful  time of year.  Some people are hoping for sun and the trails to clear, others are still hoping for one last snow storm and another powder day on the mountain.  I do get excited when I see a crocus poking up and the signs of daffodils to come.  I love the baby chicks at the feed store and I love the increase of yard sales.  Here are some treasures I've found.  Come find them at Cowgirl Cash!! ...

Lucky Lady Heirloom Dresses are handmade in Bend, OR. This has been my winter project. I've been working with some talented women in Central Oregon to envision, and create the perfect cotton all occasion dress. An everyday dress. A dress that's as appropriate at a wedding as it is at a farmers market. I've tested mine at an adult coktail party at The Loft, a concert for a country band at McMennamins, a high school ski team award ceremony, and to work. These dresses are litterally made with love out of gorgeous cotton fabric hand selected for life in and around Bend. I've been dreaming of dresses for Cowgirl Cash for three years. Finding the perfect pre-loved dress has worked, but the supply and selection isn't reliable. I considered trying a trade show route and finding "a line", but that's what other stores do. I needed something consistant with the "feel" of Cowgirl...

Save the Date for Bend's Chicken Coop Tour
Thank you to the first businesses to sponsor Bend's Chicken Coop Tour. We are pleased to have High Desert Ranch and Home, Riverwoods Country Store, Jim Moran realtor for Coldwell Banker, Mary Johnston, realtor for John L. Scott, Celebrate the Season, Bend River Window and Door, and Tullis Photo. Together we can raise needed funds for both Healing Reins and the Alyce Center. The Coop Tour allows other families to get a glimpse of how to raise healthy free range chickens, while having a fun tour of Bend's backyards. Save the Date! May 11, 2013 10-4. Tour booklets will be available in April at supporting businesses. ...

Now that Cowgirl Cash has "Winter Hours" and is only open Wednesday-Saturday until Spring break. It was time to let the recuperation begin. I started with the Breitenbush Hot Springs web site. There it was... a listing for a Bikram yoga retreat. Sunday check-in, Wednesday departure. I've done Bikram Yoga enough to know it's a series of poses, done over 90 minutes, designed to stretch and strengthen the entire body, including your organs. I also remembered it was done in an extremely hot room. I took a leap of faith and called the instructors from the Alberta St. Bikram studio in NE Portland and signed up. The week before I left I received an itinerary. Meditation the first night. Two sessions of Bikram the first day, yoga and the opportunity to participate in a Native American sweat lodge on day two. The night before I left, I sat down with my...

It's the start of my 4th year in business as the owner of Cowgirl Cash. 2012 was a good year. My sales were up, my buying skills are improving, and shoppers are finding me in the Bend's back alley. I love this business and the opportunities it gives me to buy interesting items, give to causes and charities I admire, and the flexibility to create my dream job.  When I first opened 4 years ago, I took a friends suggestion to only open Wednesday thru Saturday. It was a nice way to ease into retail and allow time for outside buying.  Eventually I moved to 7 days a week, when the tourists started to show up to enjoy the sun and fun in Bend, OR. But, I keep coming back to Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, weeks in the winter.  Call it winter hours, call it hibernation, call it ski season.  It's what I...

A shout out to my friends, family, and customers for helping make the first Cowgirl Cash Be Thankful Blood Drive a huge success.  I think saving a minimum of 32 lives deems it successful.  We had 16 donors.  Men, women, teens, first time donors and dedicated donors.  The donated Sock it to Me socks, the refueling Kombucha Mama and the homemade treats were a good draw, but mostly people just wanted to give. My personal goal is twice a year.  Look for the next blood drive coming in the spring!...

mikaylas buck
Mikayla Lewis brought a black tail buck into Cowgirl Cash this week. Mikayla is a 16 year old Bend teen with a father who knows how to hunt.  Apparently so does Mikayla.  They had been hunting hard for three days.  Early mornings, cold rainy days in Western Oregon near Roseburg.  On day three, they heard a hawk cry, and followed the commotion.  Below them Mikayla and her dad spotted a young buck chasing around a few does.  She sat down and steadied her gun or her knees.  She shot the buck using a 7 mm 08 at 185 yards out with a single shot to the heart.  They had a camera man with them, so Mikaylas first buck will be well documented and shared on Gary Lewis's Adventure Journal. Thanks for sharing your story with us! ...
